Elio's what would be known as a Faller--a label that's used for people who's gone through Ultra Wormholes created by the Ultra Beasts. A fact he hadn't known until meeting Looker, an International Police. Unbeknownst to everyone, it's an experience he's had once before at a young age ending up in a completely different hometown than the one he was born in: Pallet Town.
In that Pallet Town he became quick friends with Ash and Gary where they called one another by nicknames. For him, it was "Sun" as he only recalled his nickname his Mother had lovingly given him, believing it to be his first name. Much like his two childhood friends he wished to get his first Pokemon at the age of 10, and leave Pallet Town on a journey.
Unfortunately for Elio he found that his Mother had become different--controlling in every way from the way he dressed, to his daily schedule. The only semblance of freedom he got was within school grounds, or the few moments he was with his two childhood friends (Ash and Gary).
Those days didn't last when his life came crashing down as his Mother in an effort to protect him from perceived threats further took away his freedom, and forced a move to Alola. Learning of the devastating news despite his best efforts to act as an obedient child, he became crushed.
Things however changed when Ash as a parting gift handed him one of his treasured Pokemon: Greninja to Elio. From there, Elio's life turned for the better.
In Alola, everyone treated him better starting from his controlling Mother encouraging him to go and meet new Pokemon, to Kukui and his new friends who gave him a reason to continue moving forward through his journey. The rest? The rest is history as he helped in stopping Lusamine's plans and eventually becoming Alola's first champion.
